ברכה ראשונה

 וְשָׂמַחְתָּ בְכָל-הַטּוֹב אֲשֶׁר נָתַן-לְךָ יְקוָק אֱלֹקיךָ-וּלְבֵיתֶךָ: אַתָּה וְהַלֵּוִי וְהַגֵּר אֲשֶׁר בְּקִרְבֶּךָ (פרשת כי-תבוא כו,יא).

יב כִּי תְכַלֶּה לַעְשֵׂר אֶת-כָּל-מַעְשַׂר תְּבוּאָתְךָ, בַּשָּׁנָה הַשְּׁלִישִׁת--שְׁנַת הַמַּעֲשֵׂר:  וְנָתַתָּה לַלֵּוִי, לַגֵּר לַיָּתוֹם וְלָאַלְמָנָה, וְאָכְלוּ בִשְׁעָרֶיךָ, וְשָׂבֵעוּ. 

 יג וְאָמַרְתָּ לִפְנֵי יְקוָק אֱלֹקיךָ בִּעַרְתִּי הַקֹּדֶשׁ מִן-הַבַּיִת, וְגַם נְתַתִּיו לַלֵּוִי וְלַגֵּר לַיָּתוֹם וְלָאַלְמָנָה, כְּכָל-מִצְוָתְךָ, אֲשֶׁר צִוִּיתָנִי:  

לֹא-עָבַרְתִּי מִמִּצְוֺתֶיךָ, 

וְלֹא שָׁכָחְתִּי.  

יד לֹא-אָכַלְתִּי בְאֹנִי מִמֶּנּוּ, וְלֹא-בִעַרְתִּי מִמֶּנּוּ בְּטָמֵא, וְלֹא-נָתַתִּי מִמֶּנּוּ, לְמֵת; 

שָׁמַעְתִּי, בְּקוֹל יְקוָק אֱלֹקי–

עָשִׂיתִי, כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר צִוִּיתָנִי.  

טו הַשְׁקִיפָה מִמְּעוֹן קָדְשְׁךָ מִן-הַשָּׁמַיִם, וּבָרֵךְ אֶת-עַמְּךָ אֶת-יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְאֵת הָאֲדָמָה, אֲשֶׁר נָתַתָּה לָנוּ--כַּאֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּעְתָּ לַאֲבֹתֵינוּ, אֶרֶץ זָבַת חָלָב וּדְבָשׁ











Why is this פרשה called “וידוי מעשר”? Isn’t וידוי what we say about our עבירות, not our מצוות?

Rav Soloveitchik, Hamesh Drashot (Drasha Four)

“Repentance is grounded in two principles 1. On the power within man to accuse himself and the ability to see himself as unworthy and inferior…the wonderful power of total, unreserved self-accusation is expressed [AND] 2. On the great ability of each individual to cleanse himself, to grasp that the boundless human forces hidden away within the human personality drive one towards return to God. On the ability of man to raise himself to the greatest heights if he but wishes it…The second principle is just as important as the first…Every confession expresses itself in the call ‘Sh’chorah Ani v’na’avah’ ‘I am black but comely’ (shir Hashirim). If we do not see the ‘comely’ [of our righteousness] we cannot see the black [of our spiritual shortcomings].” 

On a surface level, the פסוקים above – “וידוי מעשר” – are the words said by a farmer after separating his מעשר on the third year of the שמיטה cycle. On another level, these are words that we can all say at different times in our lives and at different points in our journey of עבודת השם. What words or phrases in the above פסוקים can be said by a Jew whenever he or she serves Hashem properly - not only in the case of מעשר? What examples of your own Avodat Hashem come to mind when you think of these phrases? (Answer all/some/one)

  • וְלֹא שָׁכָחְתִּי
  • שָׁמַעְתִּי בְּקוֹל יְקוָק אֱלֹקי
